A student (Student C) at a vocational post-secondary institution completed the required coursework for a second associate degree.
Unfortunately, an instructor posted the wrong final grade and failed the student. The student, who was certain that she had passed all of her courses with either an A or a B, was not aware of the failing grade until the start of the college’s quarter.
The student gathered her graded coursework, quizzes, and examinations and made an appointment to discuss the failing course grade with a program director. The program director reviewed the student’s evidence, but refused to acknowledge that the instructor for the course made a grading error.
The student met with an academic advisor. She shared the course syllabus and her graded evidence. She also shared the outcome of her meeting with the program director. The advisor instructed the student that since the quarter has begun, she should be able to contact the instructor for the course directly.
The advisor also instructed the student to send an email to the director of academic affairs and copy the program director and instructor onto the email only if the instructor (1) refuses to meet with her, and (2) refuses to complete a grade change.
Favorably, the instructor acknowledged her grading mistake and immediately completed and submitted the necessary grade change document. Disappointedly, the program director was hesitant to accept and approve the grade change. Nevertheless, begrudged, the program director approved the grade change.
Student C’s second associate degree was finalized.
