Primary to Secondary Education

  • Over the months, many schools have been able to organize and provide academic support to families.  Any support is appreciated by parents, especially for parents whose education prowess is limited, but are now entirely responsible the formal education of their children.

States’ department of education websites provides useful information.  The State does not dictate to parents how to educate their children, but they do provide links to educational resources related to home schooling, public education, as well as information regarding working with private and charter schools.

The “stay at home” and “social distancing” time has been particularly difficult for parents who have children with special needs. School may continue to provide best practices assistance.  Parents can also contact their county’s department of education for assistance.

Although schools routinely administer Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (ASPP), Education Empowerment Action suggests that parents should compare their children’s ASPP scores prior to COVID-19 and post COVID-19 social distancing regulations.  This test may aid parents to identify areas where children academic aptitude has fallen and/or improved.  It may also reveal where a speicial focus should be applied towards their children's learning.

    In addition
, parents should work with individual education program (IEP) teams to assess the impact of home learning.  Parents should also continue working with IEP teams to determine home education programs that would benefits their children’s unique educational needs.
